Founded in 1983, The Carillon Choir of Ascension Lutheran Church is made up of eleven to thirteen members from diverse musical backgrounds: accomplished musicians as well as those who could not read music before joining the group. In addition to playing in two church services each month, the choir performs at weddings and holiday events, as well as handbell-only concerts. In the late 1990s, the choir was honored to play at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library during two of its annual Christmas Around The World events. As a member of the Handbell Musicians of America (formerly the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers), The Carillon Choir travels to regional conferences, where it participates in massed ringing with hundreds of other ringers, and attends workshops to learn the newest techniques for this relatively young instrument. The choir rings a five octave set of Malmark English handbells (cast of pure bronze in Plumsteadville, Pennsylvania) and five octaves of Malmark Choirchimes. Originally engaged as its one-year interim director, Christi Labrenz is celebrating her twenty-first anniversary as director of the group.
