As part of its dedication to the development of young choral composers and new music, Los Robles Master Chorale is proud to sponsor a Young Artist Choral Composers Competition in its 2011 | 2012 season.
Los Robles Master Chorale seeks to strengthen and preserve the southern California tradition of choral music through the highest standards of performance and literature. Through this competition, LRMC hopes to encourage emerging choral composers and advance the best of contemporary and future expressions of southern California choral music.
- Composition Prize
- * The winning composer will be awarded a $500 cash prize, with the possibility of two honorable mentions also being awarded at $100 each. When applicable, Los Robles Master Chorale encourages equitable division of awards between the author of the text and composer of the music.
- * The winning composition will be performed at the spring concert of Los Robles Master Chorale on May 5, 2012 in Thousand Oaks, California. The presence of the winning composer is requested.
- * The winning composer will also receive a recording of his/her composition for the exclusive use of seeking publication of the winning composition.
- Composition Guidelines
- * Composer must be 35 years old or younger on December 1, 2011.
- * Composer must reside in Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, or Santa Barbara Counties on December 1, 2011.
- * Submitted compositions must not have had prior public performances or recordings. Only original works will be accepted (no arrangements). Any winning composer who allows the winning work to be performed by another organization before the premiere by Los Robles Master Chorale will be disqualified and the cash prize and premiere will be awarded to the first runner-up.
- * One composition submitted per composer.
- * Compositions must be for a cappella, SATB choir. Divisi possible up to SSAATTBB. An optional obligato solo instrument may also be included.
- * Any language is acceptable. If not English, a literal translation must accompany the score. If the language is not Latin or a modern European language, a pronunciation guide is also required.
- * Texts must either be original or in the public domain. If texts are copyrighted, proof of permission of use must be included with the application.
- * The length of the work must be between three and five minutes.
- Submission Requirements
- * Submissions must be postmarked by December 1, 2011. We will not accept scores submitted by email.
- * Composer must submit a legible, performance-ready score of professional quality. Piano reductions are required.
- * Composer's name must not appear anywhere on the score.
- * Composer must submit six (6) copies of the score, along with a cover sheet with composition title, composer name, and contact information.
- * Do not submit any recordings with the score.
- * Composers will receive confirmation of receipt of scores, but scores will not be returned.
- * Winning composer(s) retains full rights to the composition.
- * Copy of California Driver's License as proof of age and residence is required; or if a student in southern California, then a copy of the resident state driver's license and a copy of a current registration for Fall 2011 semester in a school located in Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, or Santa Barbara Counties.
- * Incomplete submission packets will be automatically disqualified.
- Selection Process
- * Submissions will be screened for adherence to Composition Guidelines and Submission Requirements by Los Robles Master Chorale staff.
- * Scores will be reviewed and evaluated by a preliminary committee.
- * Lesley Leighton, Artistic Director, LRMC, will make the final selection(s).
- * Los Robles Master Chorale reserves the right not to choose a winner.
- * Winning composer(s) will be notified by February 1, 2012. Information about the winning compositions and composers will be posted subsequently on the Los Robles Master Chorale website.
